Dell Content Management System ActionScript 3.0 / ASP / XML

Dell Customer Centre Locator & Content Management System

These are two applications I developed for Dell while working on a project for Young & Rubicam, which ranks among the world's 10 largest advertising agencies.

The first application is a global customer centre locator for Dell – basically an interactive map that allows the user to browse Dell's offices around the world, retrieve information and make appointments with contacts. The second application is a content management system which allows the adminstrator to modify the cities and contact information within the map. The content management system features intuitive controls that anyone can use – i.e. there is no coding or programming required to add or edit cities in the map.

The deadline for this project was pretty tight: there were only 3 days to come up with a beta version of both applications. I used ActionScript 3 for the interactive map and content management, and ASP to save all of the city information into an XML file.

Above: World map view in the interactive map. The user can click on a continent or on the top navigation bar to zoom in closer to the map. Each region changes colour when the mouse is rolled over, to let the user know they can click on it.

Above: City names become visible as the user zooms closer to a region. The interactive map features tween animation for zooming in and out of regions.

Above: Clicking on the "SHOW LIST" button renders an alternate means of navigating through Dell's centres. Here the user can view a full list of all of the cities in the world map. Clicking on a city zooms the map to the continent the city is located in along with contact information for that centre.

Above: Contact information for Shanghai is displayed on the left. The e-mail address and "BOOK ROOM" button for Shanghai are hot linked to the proper destination. Tween animation is also used to slide forms and menus in and out of the screen.

Above: Modifying city information using the content management system. The user can add cities by clicking on the "ADD CITY" button and clicking anywhere on the map. The city's location can then be modified by dragging the blue dot around the map, and the position of the city's name can be changed by dragging the text around the blue dot. The city name, country and contact information can be easily edited in the text boxes on the left hand side. Clicking the "SAVE" button saves all of the information, so that the new cities are part of the map everytime the viewer is loaded. Each city is also automatically placed into it's proper location in the "SHOW LIST" view.
